Maybe Ill even try to match how prolific I was as a freshman. But Ill probably fail. The topic of todays entry is my own amusement over the number of characters in my major. Most of you are familiar with a system where majors have names, like history, psychology, computer science, or physics. If you know anything about MIT, youve probably heard that we number EVERYTHING: majors, classes, buildings, even the trees. No joke. Majors at MIT are also called courses rather than majors. Very nearly everyone at MIT (the exception being students who are involved in obscure programs) can identify their major in one number of one or two digits. For example, Course VI (which is the only one written in Roman numerals, as far as I know.oh, the intricacies of MIT jargon) is MIT for Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Below are all of the names and numbers for your convenience. As a funny side note: students often get very frustrated when majors are listed in alphabetical order, which often happens on surveys were asked to fill out. Yes, we roll almost all of Humanities into one number, and Linguistics is the same major as Philosophy, and theres no 13, 19, or 23. I know. (Also, for the record, I wrote that entire list from memory without pausing, except to double check that I had remembered all 6 of the 21s. Most MIT students can do that. Seriously. Its kind of scary.) Now, there are a couple of side notes to some of these majors. A few of them have a flexible option, which is often denoted by an arbitrary letter. Flexible physics is 8B but flexible mechanical engineering is 2A. Also, Course VI is broken into three subsections, 6-1, 6-2, and 6-3, which correspond to emphasis on electrical engineering (EE) over computer science (CS), equal emphasis on EE and CS, and emphasis on CS over EE, respectively. (That made sense, right?) Anyway, the point is, most peoples majors are MAYBE 2 characters long. Mine is five. And Im proud of that, thank you. Im 2A-CIR. Now, what in the hell does that mean? First of all, it means that I chose 2A, the flexible version of mechanical engineering. Second of all, it means I chose to concentrate in CIR, or controls, instrumentation, and robotics, which is one of the primary research departments of MITs MechE Department. Why am I telling you this now? Well, 2A is currently going through a re-accreditation process, which means that representatives from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) are at MIT evaluating the program and making sure its up to scratch. I was invited to attend a meeting for the ABET representative to talk to several undergraduates about the program to get some students perspectives. One of the questions he asked us was why we chose 2A. But before I jump into the answers, I should probably explain a little more about what 2A is. Course 2 is one of the stricter majors- there are a lot of core requirements that must be completed before a degree will be awarded. This doesnt leave much room for electives- there are dozens and dozens of cool classes offered in Course 2, but most students are only able to squeeze 2 or maybe 3 into their schedules around all of the core classes. The core classes are 2.001-2.009, and theyre all paired in levels of difficulty. In other words, 2.001 is Mechanics and Materials, and 2.002 is Mechanics and Materials II. So every 2.00-odd integer is a new topic, and every 2.00-even integer is the continuation of the class before it into more advanced material. The idea behind 2A is that students are able to skip some of the advanced core classes and gain more room in their schedule for electives. In turn, the extra electives most constitute a concentration- so you cant skip important core ideas about MechE just to take random classes that look easy. You have to prove that all of your electives contribute to the improvement of your skills in some area that interests you or will help you in your career aspirations after MIT. Lots of people take this concentration entirely outside of Course 2, so its possible to be 2A and 6 or 2A and 8. These students receive a degree from the MechE department and no official recognition from the secondary major, but they do get the opportunity to explore that major more thoroughly than they would have if they had just chosen Course 2. Other students choose classes based on pre-approved tracks, which roughly correspond to the research departments of MechE. My track is robotics, hence the CIR distinction. Othe r pre-approved tracks include pre-medicine, biomedical engineering, energy conversion, product design, and business management. (Youd be correct in guessing that not all of these are MechE research divisions- the department has been working hard to expand the number of pre-approved tracks available to choose from.) Still other students just make up their own- as long as they can convince the professor in charge of 2A that the electives theyve chosen contribute to a cohesive concentration. So, why did the students at todays accreditation meeting choose 2A? Most said they liked being able to take more electives. Some said that they already knew what they wanted to do with their degree, so they knew that certain core classes would be a waste of their time. As for me, I told the truth: I thought that Course 2 would bore me to death. Seriously. I was undecided between Courses 2 and 16, and felt that they had opposite problems- 2 was too broad while 16 was too specific. I just felt that I could spend 4 years here, take 2.001-2.009, learn a LOT of different things about a lot of different topics within the insanely broad field of mechanical engineering, and then graduate without having the slightest idea of what to do with my life. Id hardly have a chance to try something more specific and find out if Id be interested in it because Id be so busy learning ALL of the basics. (And with a field so broad, there are a LOT of basics). So, I chose 2A as a happy medium, and Im really glad I did. Because of the flexibility, so far Ive been able to take Introduction to Computer Science and Introduction to Robotics. Plus I have another 3 or 4 computer science/electrical engineering/robotics classes coming up in future semesters. And for someone with a n attention span as short as mine, I really need that- Id go crazy if I couldnt mix things up a bit and take some non-Course 2 classes every once in awhile. So, why did I just spend all this time explaining this rare combination of characters of 2A-CIR? Well, for one thing, as far as I can tell, Im the only person at MIT to have that exact major. Which I find pretty awesome. But also, there are a couple of other departments which have similar programs, and I think its an excellent concept. So keep in mind, that even if you dont know what you want to major in, or what you want to do with your life, there are opportunities at MIT for you to forge your own path. Because in the end, forging our own paths is what MIT students do best. Before I sign off, Id like to address one question I received via email a few weeks ago. They can tell the difference between someone writing what they think they should write and someone writing what they really mean. And no, theyre not entirely psychic. Because the truth is, the rest of your application will back you up. The reason that lying never works is that you wont be able to do it consistently, I promise. The only thing you really have control over is your essays and your short answers. Those are really only a small part of the larger picture of your grades, test scores, teacher recommendations and interview. (If you think you can fake a good interview, youre wrong.) So if you say in one of your short answers that the thing you do for the pleasure of it is learn a lot, and its TRUE, thatll show up in the rest of your application. If your teacher recommendations say that you love to stay after class and ask questions completely unnecessary to pass the course, and if your application shows years of dedication to an academic team, and if your interviewer tells admissions that you seemed really excited to learn about their work (this happened to me; to this day I think my interviewers office was THE coolest lab Ive ever been in), then whoever reads your short answer is going to say, yeah, that makes sense, I believe that. If, on the other hand, your teacher recommendations are mediocre, and all of your activities are athletics, and you write I learn for the fun of it, the person reading your application is going to say, well, this person seemed cool, but now I can tell that theyre full of it. And its more than just lying or telling the truth on an application. Its about how you lead your life. Dont worry, Ill step off the soapbox in a minute. But really- your application is a reflection of 4 years of your life. The only way to fake it is to be someone else for 4 years. Which is just plain dumb, honestly. Just be yourself, and it will all work out in the end. Was that too preachy? I hope that some of you understand what I mean. In the end, the bottom line is just BE HONEST on your application. Dont change your honest answer to something you think your reader will be less suspicious of- because that kind of selling out is no way to treat yourself. Murder mystery genre Paper These two stories are completely different from each other, only one of them follows the murder mystery genre we are used to.  Ã‚  A typical murder mystery usually revolves around a highly respected detective who always seems to find the murderer by the end of the story. We never get to know the victim very well in the stories, as they are either dead before the story starts or shortly after the start before we get to know anything about him or her. The murderer however seems to be there from the start, and by the middle of the story we want them to be caught. During the story we are given clues from the detective, some of the clues are red herrings to confuse us and make us think it somebody totally different from the person who did it. Most of the tension in the story comes just before the end when we are guessing whom it could be and trying to solve the plot our selves. When we are given the solution all of the loose ends are tied up and all the clues given fit into place and we are never left in suspense e.g. a cliff-hanger. The highly regarded detective is Sherlock Holmes who has an assistant called Dr. Watson who helps him with his enquiries and investigations.  We know that Sherlock Holmes is a supremely regarded detective when Mrs Stoner tells him that a friend recommended him.  Mr Holmes; I have heard of you from Mrs Farintosh whom you helped in the hour of her sore need.  Dr. Watson is very useful to the author as he helps him put across the clues and information Sherlock Holmes finds. This is because Holmes explains what he has found to Dr. Watson. If the character Dr.Wason did not exist it would be very hard to give us the clues. As usual we dont get to meet the victim we were just told about her from Helen Stoner the victims sister.  She was but 20 at the time of her death, and yet her hair had already began to whiten, even as mine has.  We suspect the real murderer from a very early stage when he (the murderer) realises his stepdaughter has been to see Sherlock Holmes. He storms into see the detective. From this confrontation it is obvious what the man could be capable of from the physical description we are given of him.  Because of the circumstances of the young girl being killed weeks before her wedding, and the possibility of her sister experiencing the same fate the reader unconsciously sympathetic and anticipates the murderer being discovered. The speckled band yet again shows how typical it is to the murder mystery genre by the clues and the red herrings that are given in the story. For example, some of the clues are; the discovery of the ventilator that adjoined the two rooms, the realisation that the bell pull was fake, and the detection of the bed being fixed to the floor.  The fact that there was a gypsy camp near by was meant to ply the readers ideas into thinking that the gypsies responsible some way. Another red herring given was the mention of the cheetah and the baboon that the stepfather kept as pets. At the end of the mystery the murderer is revealed, all the clues are solved, and the plot is explained in full leaving a very tidy ending and the reader fully satisfied with the conclusion.  Lamb to the Slaughter is a completely different murder fiction, we are told the story from the murderers point of view, and we sympathise with her account of the circumstances. This is because at the start of the story shes genuinely looking forward to her husband coming home. Shes oblivious to the fact of devastating news he is going to give her. (Bad enough for her to kill him)  As the detectives search for the murder weapon we are curious to know whether she will get away with it. At the end while the detectives are eating the murder weapon black humour is used as the story is funny in a morbid sense. We also find black humour in the tittle as it is literally true. The end of the story is different to that of The Speckled Band because the reader is left in suspense and we will never really know the outcome of any further enquires.  Another aspect that differs in the two stories is the language used in each. In The Speckled Band the language is very old fashioned and sometimes difficult to understand, some of these words are: defray which means Make good, repay, would fain that means would like to, and apertve which means opening. Roald Dahl however uses language that we are much more used to reading in the Lamb to the Slaughter.

Almost all of them have failed. There have been various theories of democratic stability and explanations of democratic failure. In general, these theories agree that poor nations, with massive socio economic development needs and high popular expectation: as poorly integrated nations, with deep ethnic divisions; and as politically underdeveloped nations, with fragile party system, weak administrative bureaucracies, and little experience with the give-and-take of large representative institutions, Third world nations, at their present levels of development, have little realistic hope of sustaining democratic institutions. According to Diamond (1988) the democratic renaissance in Africa has been led by the continents wealthiest and most populous nation, Nigeria. There was huge expectation after the return of power to civilian elected government in 1979, after thirteen years of military rule. This was to be a crucial test of liberal democracy in Africa (Sklar 1982). The system collapsed in less than four years as a result of massive corruption, mismanagement and electoral violence and fraud. This led to the military coup of 1983. Democracy is defined as a political system which meets three essential conditions, namely, meaningful and extensive competition among individuals and political parties; a highly inclusive level of political participation in the selection of leaders and policies; and a level of civil and political liberties sufficient to ensure the integrity of political competition and participation. Other concepts related to these are democratic stability, the likelihood of its enduring over time, particularly through periods of unusual conflict, strain and crisis. Democratic theorists stress the peculiar degree to which the stability of democracy depends on a widespread belief in its legitimacy. Democracy as it is practised in Western nations such as the united States usually involve a thorough process of contestant selections. This culminates in the primaries within individual parties. In this system, the party candidate is picked based on the acceptance of the individuals manifesto. There is also party loyalty and candidates do not defect to other parties or form entirely new ones if they do not win the primaries. The national assembly is bicameral, with a senate and a house of representatives distributed among the states by population. There is also the apex judiciary court known as the Supreme Court. Nigerias transition towards democracy has only begun. The re-establishment of an elected government after decades of military rule in 1999 formed merely a starting point in a transition process towards a democratic society-a transition that can be expected to take many years. Democratic government in its full sense comprises a wide area of issues; a very important one among them is the creation of accountable institutions (Harneit-Sievers 2004). Political parties form another core group of institutions in any functioning democratic system. Under current Nigerian conditions, however, most political parties are merely zero-issue alliances of influential individuals and small groups who are able to control; and, often enough manipulate party structures, candidacies and even the electoral process itself. In Nigeria, a major issue impeding democracy is the selection process of political office holders. This is because so far, the country has been unable to hold free, fair and credible elections. The 2003 elections were billed as a landmark as it was the first time since independence in 1960 that political leadership changed hands from one civilian to another (Herskovits 2007). The election results showed overwhelming victories for the ruling party, PDP as the presidential winner received 70 percent of the votes. According to international and domestic observers alike, the elections themselves were disastrous with even more rigging and violence than during the previous presidential elections in 1999. The run up to the elections also witnessed the assassination of two gubernatorial front runners and violent election related incidents. Based on how expensive partisan politics is in Nigeria, governments at all levels will rather starve other sector than lave their electoral ambition to suffer funding. This is apart from the fact that in most places, governance has almost been suspended for scheming ahead of the polls. As a result, Nigerians may therefore have to wait till elections are completed to enjoy several social amenities promised during the last tenure. The electoral process has also witnessed legal challenges as contestants take election winners to court to contest such results. A memorable case of this is the Osun State elections which were overruled after three and half years. The election result stated that the incumbent governor, Oyinlola won the elections. The opposition took the election result to court. During the investigation process, it was discovered using biometric machine that several people has voted up to 30 times each for the incumbent governor. The court therefore asked that this votes be cancelled. This led to the opposition candidate Raufu Aregbesola becoming the governor. As a result of almost four years of uncertainty in the state, local and foreign investors lost confidence in the state. As a result, several companies already operating in the state closed and moved to other states. This led to massive retrenchment and increased unemployment in the state. It also caused a reduction in state revenue generated. The electoral process in Nigeria has a negative impact on the country in general. This is because revenue that could be used to provide infrastructure needed by business are used for funding elections. This has led to continuous borrowing and deficit budget for year 2011. The total budget for the 2011 elections released by INEC was put at N89billion ($659million). In the federal budget for 2011, another N46.4 billion has been allocated to the same elections. Indeed, the total budgetary allocation for elections is about N133 billion naira. It is important to state that INECs budget for 2011 dwarfs the budget of most states of the federation. Osun state has budget of N88.1 billion, Kwara state N68.6 billion and Edo has a budget of N106 billion. It is also important to note that this would be funded by government borrowing. When compared to other developing countries such as Bangladesh, India and Ghana, the cost on per capita basis in Nigeria was more than double. INECs N74 billion on v oters register amounts to N1, 138 per capita for 65 million registered voters. Ghana conducted its 2008 elections at the cost of $40million which amounts to $3 per capita. The instability caused by flawed elections has led to a threat to foreign investment. As a developing country, Nigeria required foreign investment to survive. The use of large sums of revenue for funding elections rather than developing infrastructure necessary for investment makes the country less desirable to investors. As a result, there is lack of confidence in the country. The political violence and killings have also affected the countrys image abroad. There is also a threat to security as assassination of political aspirants and kidnap of their families is becoming rampant. Recently, the government has taken various measures to ensure free and fair elections in Nigeria. This was affirmed by the sack of former INEC boss, Maurice Iwu who was widely accused of corruption and complacency in electoral result manipulation. The new INEC boss, Jega has committed to ensuring a free and fair election in the country. There has also been the amendment of the electoral law in Nigeria in order to further curb the widespread election rigging in the country. Conclusion The issue of political instability has affected the activities of multinational companies in Nigeria; the oil companies in the oil rich delta where kidnap is rampant have been seriously affected. Most multinational companies are currently closing their business and relocating to other countries with more favourable environment and required infrastructure. The level of uncertainty and instability disrupts the profit hunt and causes inability to meet corporate targets. In the political foyer, some groups have been neglected which is not a practice of true democracy as power is been controlled by the dominant party with large resources. In order to reduce the problem of election rigging, Nigeria has to be firm in its commitment to providing free and fair election. This goes beyond paying lip service. The INEC also should be given more powers in order to prevent it been manipulated by the government. There is also the increased need for foreign observers to train and sensitise INEC officials and also to monitor elections.

The not so obvious but informative messages are one of best aspects of this nineties flick. The special effects are impressive considering this movie is indeed from the nineties. Pleasantville touches base on many actual conflicts in America and throughout history in the most subtle but blunt way. My favorite thing about this movie is how it takes this blind community and shows them what they never knew existed: passion and real emotion. I have heard many people talk about their love for earlier decades such as the fifties and how they wish they could go back and live in the â€Å"Simple Times† but in†¦show more content†¦I found a website that brings a spiritual point of view to pop culture and on it I found a nice outline of ‘Pleasantville’ filled with commentary and ideas of symbolism in relation to the Bible.
